With how much mail order flower moves through this community, everyone should know how to do a 60 second mold check. Moldy flower isn't a "meh, whatever" problem, inhaling mold spores can put you in actual medical trouble, especially aspergillus.
The #1 thing people confuse: trichomes vs mold
Trichomes (the frosty stuff you paid for) look like tiny crystals or glass mushrooms. They sparkle and they're evenly spread across the bud.
Mold looks like cobweb, fuzz, or powder. It sits ON TOP of the bud in patches, it doesn't sparkle, and it usually concentrates in one spot instead of coating everything evenly. If you're squinting at something white and asking "frost or fuzz," fuzz is bad, frost is good.
A cheap jeweler's loupe or even your phone camera zoomed in settles it instantly. Trichomes have visible stalks and heads. Mold looks like spider silk or dust.
The smell test
Trust your nose, it's better at this than your eyes:
Check inside, not just outside
Bud rot (botrytis) starts at the stem INSIDE dense buds where you can't see it. Crack a big bud open. If the inside is brown, gray, or has that cobweb texture while the outside looks fine, that's rot. Dense, fat buds are the highest risk, which is exactly the stuff that looks best in photos.
Other red flags
If you find mold
Don't smoke it, and don't cut around it. By the time mold is visible, spores are through the whole bud and probably its neighbors in the bag. Photograph everything, contact the vendor for a refund or replacement, and if they refuse, post the experience in Brands & Reviews so the next person knows.
And no, you can't fix moldy bud in the oven. Heat kills live mold but the spores and the mycotoxins they already produced stay right there.
Prevention on your end
Half of mold cases happen AFTER delivery from bad storage. Airtight jar, 58 to 62% humidity pack, dark cabinet. Full storage rundown is in the THCa Basics section.
Also worth knowing: full panel COAs include a yeast and mold count. One more reason to buy from vendors who test beyond potency, the COA guide pinned in this section covers what to look for.

The smell test
Trust your nose, it's better at this than your eyes:
- Musty basement, wet towel, or hay smell = moisture problem, likely mold
- Ammonia or urine smell = bud was sealed wet and is actively rotting
- Good flower smells loud and distinct. Bad flower smells like a damp attic.

Other red flags
- Dark brown or black spots that smear when touched
- White powder on leaves that wipes off (powdery mildew)
- Bud feels wet or spongy and never got crispy
- The bag or jar arrived with condensation inside
