The Legal Situation

THCa exists in a gray area right now. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp products with less than 0.3% delta-9 THC are federally legal. THCa flower technically qualifies because in its raw form it tests under that threshold.

But here's the thing, once you heat it, it converts to THC. So while the plant itself might be legal to ship and sell, the second you smoke it you're essentially smoking weed.

Some states have caught onto this and explicitly banned THCa regardless of the Farm Bill. Always check your state laws before ordering anything.

States that have specifically banned or restricted THCa hemp (as of recently, always double check):
  • Arkansas
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Minnesota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island

Laws change fast so don't just go off this list. Do your own research and stay updated in this section.


COAs - What They Are and Why You Need Them

A COA is a Certificate of Analysis. It's a third party lab test that shows exactly what's in the product you're buying.

A good COA will show:
  • THCa percentage
  • Delta-9 THC percentage (needs to be under 0.3% to be legal hemp)
  • CBD and other cannabinoids
  • Pesticide screening
  • Heavy metal screening
  • Microbial testing

Never buy from a vendor who won't provide a COA. Seriously. If they can't show you lab results, move on. It's not worth it.

Also check the date on the COA. If it's from two years ago that doesn't tell you much about what you're getting today.


How to Spot a Scam

This stuff happens more than people realize. Here's what to watch for:
  • No COA or they dodge when you ask for one
  • Prices way too low to be real (if it seems too good to be true it probably is)
  • No real website, just a social media page or random link
  • Pressure to pay with Zelle, CashApp, or crypto with no buyer protection
  • No reviews anywhere or only reviews on their own page
  • They disappear after you pay

Stick to vendors who have been vouched for by real people in the community. That's what the Vendors & Deals section is for.

THCa is not THC

THCa is the raw form of THC that exists in the live cannabis plant. It stands for tetrahydrocannabinolic-acid. In its raw form it does not get you high. That's the big thing people get confused about.

So how does it get you high?

Heat. When you apply heat to THCa it goes through a process called decarboxylation, or decarb for short. Basically the heat burns off a little carbon dioxide and converts THCa into THC, which is the thing that actually gets you high.

This happens when you:
  • Smoke it
  • Vape it
  • Cook it into edibles (as long as you heat it enough)

So buying THCa flower is essentially buying cannabis that becomes regular weed the second you light it.

Why does this matter legally?

This is the part that makes THCa interesting right now. Because THCa is technically not THC in its raw form, it exists in a legal gray area in a lot of states under the 2018 Farm Bill. A lot of vendors sell it as a hemp product.
